Environment

Here in Scoil Naomh Muire we are doing our bit to care for the environment and encourage good recycling practice from Junior infants right through the school. We are trying to put the motto of Reduce, Re-use, Recycle into practice. It is the responsibility of all staff and children to put their waste materials in the bins provided. Each classroom is provided with three bins. We have “bin teams” made up of the children in 5th and 6th class who take turns to empty and weigh our refuse, recycling and compost material on a weekly basis. We also have “Litter Wardens” who take turns to pick up any refuse out in the yard after each break. They are all doing a marvelous job. All composting material is placed in our composting bins and is used on the raised beds in the school garden.
The plastics, bottles, paper and cardboard are put in the recycling bin ready to be collected on the days specified for collection.

We were awarded our first Green Flag for the reduction of  litter and waste in May 2012. The entire school population contributed to getting this flag and we included the flag raising ceremony as part of our activities on June 20th to mark the school’s 50th anniversary.

We were awarded our second Green Flag for energy conservation in 2014. Once again we got great support from all staff members, pupils and parents as we worked to attain this flag. The Chairman of the Board of Management, Paddy Dennehy, helped by Green Flag Committee members raised the flag as part of our end of year sports day.

Green Flag

At present we are concentrating on the third Green Flag for water conservation, while continuing to work to retain the two previous flags.
